Equipment

  • 1 Saucepan
  • 1 bowl
  • 1 Spoon or piping bag

Ingredients

  • 6 large eggs
  • 3 tablespoons mayonnaise
  • 1 teaspoon yellow mustard
  • 1 teaspoon white vinegar
  • 0.25 teaspoon salt
  • 0.125 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 to 3 drops black food coloring for the web effect
  • 1 as needed water enough for soaking and mixing
  • 1 optional garnish paprika, chopped chives, or sliced olives

Instructions

  • Place the eggs in a saucepan and cover them with water. Bring the water to a gentle boil, then reduce the heat and simmer until the eggs are cooked through. Transfer them to cold water so they cool completely before peeling.
  • Gently crack the shells all over, but keep them on the eggs. The cracked shells help create the web pattern later. If you want a stronger design, make several small cracks instead of a few large ones.
  • In a bowl, mix enough water to fully cover the eggs with a few drops of black food coloring. Stir until the water looks very dark. Carefully place the cracked eggs into the mixture and let them soak in the fridge.
  • After soaking, peel away the shells. Slice the eggs in half lengthwise and remove the yolks. Mash the yolks with mayonnaise, mustard, vinegar, salt, and pepper until smooth. Spoon or pipe the filling back into the egg whites.
  • Top the eggs with your favorite garnish, then chill until ready to serve. The contrast between the creamy filling and the dark webbed whites makes them extra festive on the platter.

Notes

Store the deviled eggs in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. For the best texture, keep them chilled until serving. These are not meant to be reheated, so serve them cold or slightly cool from the fridge.
