Riley Thompson

Hi, I’m Riley Thompson, and if you’ve found your way to Savory Pulse, welcome to my kitchen! I’m 38 years old, currently cooking up life (and a lot of meals) just outside of Asheville, North Carolina. I believe good food has a rhythm, one that hums through your home, wraps around the dinner table, and pulses straight through your memories.

My love of cooking didn’t come from a fancy culinary school. It started in my grandma’s tiny Ohio kitchen, where she made scratch biscuits that could hush a room full of noisy cousins. I was the kid hovering at the edge of the counter, asking too many questions and sneaking spoonfuls of sauce when no one was looking. I never planned on making a life out of food, but one day, I realized I already had.

I spent my twenties hopping between odd jobs, always cooking on the side, dinner parties, bake sales, that one chaotic Thanksgiving where I made four pies and swore never again (but of course, I did it again the next year). My kitchen became a place of learning, testing, and yes, burning things now and then. I’ve made cookies that could chip a tooth and casseroles that made my neighbors show up uninvited. Every mistake taught me something better than any textbook ever could.

Savory Pulse was born out of a desire to bring that realness to the table. No gatekeeping, no gourmet snobbery, just honest, flavorful food you can actually make at home. I write my recipes the way I’d talk to a friend: casually, with lots of side notes and the occasional “trust me, it works.” Because home cooking should feel like home, comforting, forgiving, and filled with little surprises.

I don’t believe in “perfect” dishes, only memorable ones. Some of my favorites? A slow-roasted chicken with garlic that melts into the pan. A smoky corn chowder I messed with until it tasted like my childhood summers. And my ultimate guilty pleasure, loaded skillet nachos that somehow always taste better at midnight.

These days, I split my time between recipe testing, chasing my two dogs away from rising dough, and connecting with fellow home cooks like you. Nothing makes me happier than hearing someone tried one of my recipes and made it their own.

So whether you’re here looking for dinner ideas, kitchen confidence, or just something new to try this weekend, I’m thrilled to cook alongside you. Grab your apron, let’s find our rhythm together.
